Millville United Methodist Church History

In 1809 the first Circuit Rider preached at the Thomas Eves Mill in the vicinity of Millville. From this effort the first class meeting of eleven members developed and from this group eventually sprang the Millville Methodist Episcopal, the lola Methodist Episcopal and the Greenwood Methodist Episcopal Churches. The Millville folks worshiped for years in the Union Church of Millville, constructed in 1881, which is now the Millville Christian Church. In 1895 those who called themselves Methodists decided to form a separate church, and John Christian offered to let them meet on the second floor of the Johnson and Kile General store at the corner of State and Walnut Streets. An intensive canvas for funds began in 1896, and the cornerstone was laid a year later, June 6, 1897. It appears a chain letter of sorts was used as a part of this fund raising campaign........
